We don’t know about you, but firing up the lawnmower first thing on a Saturday or Sunday morning isn’t our idea of a relaxing weekend. Plus, if you start it up at 7 am, the neighbors are going to be coming round to your house with pitchforks to complain.
Outside of hiring a garden maintenance company to cut your lawn, there’s not much else you can do to avid this task – Or is there?
The robot lawnmower is your answer to this problem. We’ve all seen robotic vacuum cleaners in movies and TV shows, skimming around the room, picking up dust and dirt. Well, there’s a similar machine available for mowing your lawn.
Can you imagine setting up the mower, and then leaving for your golf game? By the time you get back to your home, the mower has done its job and is stores itself away until next weekend. Effortless, hands-free mowing sounds like a dream come true for many homeowners.
In this review, we’ll look at the best robotic lawn mower for your yard.

This model works in the rain and uses the same run-quiet technology as the other Husky models. It’s a good choice for homeowners that need a full-size model at a reasonable price point. We still think we would rather have the 430X over this machine, but it’s all about your personal preference.
The anti-collision sensors ensure it never runs over animals or objects, and the tilt sensors stop the blades in seconds if anything or anyone lifts the machine. If the mower detects someone picking it up during its mowing session, it shuts down and sends a theft alarm to your mobile device through the app.
The 430XH has the same GPS tracking as the other Husky models, allowing you to track its location if someone steals it from your yard.
- Smart home capability connects to Alexa
- Suitable for all weather mowing
- Mows up to 0.8-acres
- Cuts grass up to 3.4-inches in height

Robotic Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide
Purchasing a robotic lawn mower for your yard sounds like a great idea – no more spending your weekends pushing the mower around for hours and cleaning up the trimmings. With a robotic mower, you take the hassle out of your lawn maintenance.
In this buyer’s guide, we’re going to give you everything you need to know about choosing the best robotic lawn mower for your yard.
Maximum Cutting Area
Every robotic lawn mower comes with specifications for maximum lawn size (cutting area). When unboxing your machine, you’ll notice that it includes a boundary wire in the kit. This boundary wire nominates the cutting area, keeping the mower’s operation within these boundary lines.
Some machines come with expansion kits that allow you to increase the cutting area. Robotic lawnmowers aren’t suitable for large areas above 1-acre, as the battery life limits the machine’s run time to between 1 to 3.5-hours, depending on the model.
These machines are ideal for lawns up to 0.8-acres, making them an excellent choice for family homes with medium to larger yards. Most robot’s working range is between 0.25-acres to 0.8-acres in size. Choose the model that suits your lawn. If you purchase a model that’s too small for your yard, you won’t get a complete cut, and a model that’s too big is a waste of your money.
Positioning the Charging Station
Your robotic lawn mower comes with an automatic charging station. Your robot will return to the station by itself after completing its mowing function. There’s no need to hook it up to the charger yourself, which makes for true set-and-forget technology.
You program the robot, and it undocks from the station at the nominated mowing time, completes the job, and then returns to the docking station to charge for the next session.
You’ll need to set up the docking station near a power supply, and that should be in an area where the robot has access to your lawn. Setting it up in your garage is no good if you keep the garage door closed.
Make sure you set up the charging station on a flat surface close to the start point of your lawn. Ideally, you want a weatherproof location, keeping your Machine dry while it’s charging – remember, water and electricity don’t mix.
We recommend building or buying a mini-garage for your robotic lawnmower, sort of like a dog kennel for the machine. Fit it with an electrical outlet and have a professional electrician connect it up to your home’s power supply.
Batteries
When selecting your robotic lawn mower, make sure you check the battery type before you purchase. You want a robotic lawn mower that uses a lithium-ion battery pack. These batteries offer you the most extended service life for your robot, giving you more run time for the machine.
Older or cheaper models may include lead-acid batteries. While a lead-acid battery works, it doesn’t have anywhere near the same capacity as a lithium-ion battery pack. Lithium-ion batteries allow for more charging cycles than lead-acid types, providing a longer service life for the battery, and your mower.
Run Time and Battery Charging
The run time of your machine will vary, depending on the model. Most robotic lawnmowers offer runtimes of between one and 2.5-hours. The run time of the device plays a significant role in choosing your preferred model.
The run time of the robot is dependent on the battery pack capacity, and the power consumption of the machine. Manufacturer’s match the two factors. They produce a mower that operates efficiently around your yard, with enough run time to cut your lawn.
However, as lithium-ion battery packs age with service, they start to lose capacity. If you were getting 2-hours of run time out of your robot when you first use it, you could expect only 80% of that capacity after a few years of running the machine.
As a result of this decrease in battery life, you might have to change the battery pack every three to five years.
Noise Levels
Have you ever decided to get an early start on your weekend chores? You head out into the yard, set up and gas the mower, and then start it up. About 10-minutes later, your neighbor arrives on your lawn in their pajamas, with a sour scowl on their face. You woke them up, and they aren’t happy.
Most gas-powered lawnmowers operate at noise levels between 80 to 85dB. That’s just on the borderline of what it takes to start causing hearing damage. Your neighbors are sure to hear your lawnmower, and if it’s early in the morning, you can bet they’ll complain.
A robotic lawn mower operates on an electric motor, and it runs near silent. You can set your robot to start mowing your lawn at 3 am, it when you wake up, you’ll have freshly cut grass, and the machine’s noise won’t disturb your sleep or drive your neighbors crazy.
The average robotic lawnmower operates at noise levels between 55 to 65dB, making it far quieter than a gas-powered or full-size electric mower.
Cutting Deck Width
The cutting deck refers to the coverage of the cutting blades during operation. Look for a machine where the cutting width is as wide as possible. The wider the cutting deck, the fewer passes the robot needs to make to cut your lawn. As a result, you get more run time and better efficiency out of your robot.
However, bigger is not always better. A larger cutting deck might not be the best choice for smaller gardens with tight spaces. Remember to clean the cutting deck once a week to make sure your blades are clean and undamaged.
Cutting Height and Adjustable Cutting Deck
Most robotic lawn mowers come with adjustable cutting decks, allowing the robot to change the cutting height automatically. The robot features sensors that detect the distance from the cutting deck to the soil surface. Most robots will later the height of the cutting deck when it must traverse bumps and dips in your lawn.
The maximum cutting height of the machine determines the height of the grass you can mow. Robotic lawn mowers are not suitable for cutting long grass. If your lawn is over 3-inches in height, you’ll have to cut it with a regular lawnmower first, and then set up your robot to take care of weekly maintenance going forward.
Maximum Operating Slope
If your yard has a slope in the lawn, you’ll need a robot that’s capable of climbing. Measure the largest slope in your garden, and make sure that the robot can operate effectively in your yard. The last thing you need is a robot that can’t climb, wasting your time and money.
Weight
The weight of your robotic lawnmower isn’t significant since you don’t have to push it around your yard. Most robots weight less than 20-lbs, making them easy to pick up and move around.
Robot Size and Cutting Range
The most important factors regarding choosing your robotic lawnmower are the size, capacity, and range. If you have a small garden, make sure you choose a model that can get into tight corners. Look for models with three wheels that offer zero-turn functionality.
The cutting range is vital, and if you select a model that can’t cut your entire lawn in one session, you’ll either buy an extension pack or finish the rest manually with your lawnmower.
Safety Features and Sensors
Robotic lawnmowers work autonomously. That means that you input your required settings and leave the robot to do its thing. However, since it’s a robot, it only does what it’s programming tells it to do. Therefore, you need to ensure you select a model that comes with built-in safety features.
What if your robot runs over kids’ toys lying on the lawn? What if it encounters animals or other objects in its way? Fortunately, the manufacturer’s thought of that ahead of time. All robotic models in these review feature sensors that detect the lifting or tilting of the cutting deck, stopping the blades in a fraction of a second.
The integrated sensors for obstacle detection let the machine know when it encounters an immovable object. When the robot detects a rock or tree, it will back off and adjust its path to keep it on track. Other models also include rain or slope sensors, and others feature theft alarms with PIN code protection.
If someone decides to steal your mower while you’re not at home, the system notifies your smartphone, telling you that someone is tampering with the mower. Some models also include GPS tracking, like LoJack for your robotic mower.
If you consider the price tag of these machines, it’s an excellent security feature.
Additional Functionality
If you want a mower that can handle your front and back yard on different mowing sessions, look for a model that offers multi-zone mowing. Mowers designed for larger yards may feature GPS navigation that links to Bluetooth and your home Wi-Fi setup.
Apps and Smart Home Compatibility
As mentioned, some of these models feature smart applications that connect to your home Wi-Fi system. The Husqvarna models link to Alexa, allowing you to control or track your mower with a simple voice command.
Some models hook up to apps that allow you to track your mower’s status at any time. Sure, smart functionality is not always necessary, but handling your mowing tasks is so much easier.
Maintenance and General Cleaning
Robotic lawnmowers are low-maintenance machines. However, you’ll need to give your mower a checkup once every week to make sure the cutting deck is clean. Some models are waterproof, and you can rinse out the cutting deck with your garden hose.
After a year or two of use, you might notice that the grass starts to show cutting fringes, making the lawn look tatty after a mow. This feathering is a sign of the blades going dull, and you’ll have to sharpen them at a dealer.
We recommend you take your mower to an authorized service agent for sharpening or replacement of the mower blades.
Pricing – Affordable Isn’t Always Better
A standard electric model lawn mower will cost you a few hundred dollars for a good machine that lasts for years. However, a robotic lawnmower could set you back as much as $2,500, depending on the model you buy.
As with everything in life, we often make the mistake of thinking that the more expensive the machine, the better the performance. That’s not always the case with robotic lawnmowers. Purchasing a top-end premium model might not be necessary if you have a smaller yard.
The difference between a robot that can cut 0.8-acres, and one that cuts 0.25-acres – is thousands of dollars on the price tag. Focus on choosing a model that has the coverage you need, rather than the price.
Wheels and Casters
Your robotic lawn mower comes with three to four wheels. Most models will have two larger wheels in the rear, with two smaller casters in the front. Others have the larger wheels in the front, while some models feature two large rear wheels, with a single caster at the front.
The smaller wheels at the front of the machine provide your mower with zero-turn functionality. The mower can spin on its axis without needing to draw its turning access as a result of this wheel setup. This feature is especially crucial for lawns with tight corners, allowing the robot the back out and turn around.
Look for models that feature tread on the larger wheels. The tread provides the machine with traction, allowing it to climb slopes on wet grass without slipping.
Scheduling Software
Most robotic mowers come with a software setup that allows for customizable programming of your cutting times. With this feature, you can set up exactly when you want your mower to operate. We like setting up the robot to cut at night.
With this strategy, you always have a clean-cut lawn, and no-one will ever see you mowing. Don’t be surprised if your neighbor asks you how you manage to pull off such a good-looking garden without ever mowing.
Some models allow up to 7 to 10 programmable sessions per week. Send the robot out to trim your lawn every third day, and you’ll always have a neat yard with freshly cut grass.
Cutting Path and Cutting System
When choosing your preferred robotic lawn mower, make sure you look at the machine’s cutting pattern and path. Some models move back and forth, systematically cutting your lawn in straight lines. However, this functionality can end up drawing track lines from the machine.
The Husqvarna range of mowers operates in a randomized cutting path, preventing the appearance of track lines on your lawn.
Collection Bags
You don’t get a collection bag with your robotic mower. You might be wondering why, and the answer is simple. The design of the robot allows you to trim your lawn two or three times a week. As a result of the cutting frequency, your yard never gets long, requiring the use of a collection bag.
Instead, the robot trims a half an inch or less off the top of your grass with each cutting session. The machine expels the trimmings, where they dry and blow away with the wind. Think about that, no more tossing away the trimmings or raking the lawn after you finish mowing.
Robot Lawn Mower FAQs
Choosing the right robotic lawn mower for your yard is no easy task; there are many components to consider before you buy. Look through these frequently asked questions for more insight into selecting the right robotic mower for your yard.
Will my robot lawn mower destroy my flowerbeds?
Robotic lawnmowers only cut to the specified boundary area set by the inductive boundary cable. Therefore, your mower won’t destroy your flowerbeds, as it stays contained within the working area.
Can a robot lawn mower handle uneven surfaces and debris on the lawn?
Your robotic lawn mower can run over smaller garden debris like acorns and small branches without any hassle. However, if you have a storm in your yard the day before you mow, check that there is no heavy debris lying on the lawn before you send the robot out to mow.
The robot features sensors that detect the surface level, adjusting the cutting deck for a consistent cut on your lawn.
How do I charge the robot?
It’s simple – you don’t. The mower will return to its docking station after finishing its scheduled mowing. You schedule its duty and then walk away. You never have to worry about trimming your lawn, which looks great at any time during the week.
How often do you have to service the machine?
As with conventional mowers, robotic models require you to service them periodically. Husqvarna agents are your best option if you’re using this model. For the other mentioned in this review, you’ll have to check for service agents in your area.
Is a robotic lawn mower silent?
Robotic lawn mowers make a fraction of the noise compared to gasoline models, producing no emissions. Most gas-powered lawnmowers produce sound up to 85dB. With a robotic model, you get noise levels of around 50 to 54dB. They run near-silent, and your neighbors will never complain, even if your robot works at night.
The Best Robotic Lawn Mower – The Verdict
By now, you should have a good idea of the best robotic lawn mower for your yard. We recommend that you pick a model with a solid reputation and brand behind the mower. That’s why we advise you to invest in a Husqvarna model.
Husky makes some of the best gardening machines available, and this Swedish company has a trusted track record. If you’re going to buy a robotic lawnmower and lay out thousands of dollars for the machine, we recommend you go with a reputable and trustworthy brand – and you can’t go wrong with a Husky.
These machines come with a 2-year warranty on manufacturing defects, but we doubt you’ll have any problems with your mower, provided you maintain it from season-to-season.
Our top three picks for this review are top-quality models and the best in the Husqvarna range. The 310 is an excellent choice for medium to large yards, while the 430X is the flagship model that’s suitable for cutting lawns up to 0.8-acres.
