Chipper Shredder Buyers Guide

Now you have a good idea of the best chipper shredders available. Let’s unpack the characteristics of these machines to help you narrow down the right choice for your yard work.

The Characteristics of a Good Chipper Shredder

Any gardener understands the hassle and effort involved with cleaning up around the garden. Maintenance is just a part of gardening, and we take it with stride. However, why struggle with these chores when technology can help you take the effort out of your yardwork?

A chipper/shredder machine helps you make the most out of your garden, putting your trimmings and organic waste to work in the compost heap, instead of in the landfill.

Create mulch at home from the leaves, twigs, branches, and vines around your yard. Turn branches into wood chippings for ground cover on flowerbeds. Save hundreds of dollars on compost and mulch throughout the growing season, with a chipper/shredder in your toolshed.

Is There A Difference Between a Chipper and a Shredder?

Chippers and shredders are separate tools for individual purposes in the garden. However, since both machines share similar components, most manufacturers combine them into one tool. Let’s unpack the functionality of both of these characteristics of your chipper/shredder machine.

Chippers

The chipper function on your machine helps you with processing the tougher garden refuse lying around your yard after maintenance. Branches and twigs are no match for the jaws of a chipper, and it turns them into manageable chips in seconds.

Chipper blades are heavier and more robust than shredders since they have to contend with cutting tougher materials. Those gardeners chipping branches with diameters thicker than 3-inches will need to purchase an independent gas-powered model with a strong motor specialized for chipping.

Shredding

The shredder function on your chipper/shredder machine helps you with the processing of smaller yard waste, such as vines, stalks, and leaves. The cutting deck features hinged flails or blades designed to rotate inside the housing, chopping the leaves to bits in seconds.

These units come with a vacuum port that sucks the waste into the shredding chamber for reduction, before sending it to an exit chute that connects to a collection bag. A shredder component is an excellent tool for making mulch and compost out of your yard waste.

Feed the nutrients back into your garden, and save on mulch and fertilizer the following growing season.

Chipper Shredders Offer Gardeners the Best of Both Machines in One

Chipper/shredders give gardeners access to both tools in one machine. However, it’s crucial to note that most of these machines are only suitable for use around the yard. Contractors or landscapers will need to source a specialized chipper or shredder that can handle demanding working conditions.

When selecting the right model for your yard work, you must consider the specs of your machine before finalizing your purchase. Gas-powered shredders are more powerful, and they process larger branches, but they’re noisy, and your neighbors might complain about the racket while you’re shredding or chipping.

Drive Types

Chipper/shredders feature two different types of drives; the direct drive and the clutch drive.

With the direct-drive motor, the blades start moving as soon as you turn on the machine. A clutch drive motor allows you to engage the drive using a lever or switch. The direct drive model is more common, and it’s typically more affordable than clutch-drive types.

Clutch drive models usually have stronger motors and can handle tougher garden waste than the direct-drive types. The clutch drive models also experience fewer jams during operation.

Other Factors to Consider When Selecting a Chipper Shredder Machine

When selecting the right chipper/shredder for your gardening needs, we recommend you consider the following factors

  • Size and capacity
  • Feeder type
  • The size of the collection bag
  • Power source
  • The reduction ratio of the material
  • Noise levels
  • Tank capacity for gas-powered models
  • Efficiency
  • Your budget

Machine Capacity

The first step in choosing the right chipper/shredder is selecting the model with the right capacity for the type of yard work you deal with regularly. If you’re shredding and chipping smaller branches and twigs, then an electric model is ideal. It’s a quieter machine than a gas-powered model, and it still manages to cut up most garden waste.

If you’re a homeowner with a large property, or you live on an estate, then you need a gas-powered model with a stronger motor. Gas-powered models can demolish 3-inch branches in seconds, and they suit longer running times that might burn out the motors on electric models.

Some electric models have larger capacities than others, and the larger your yard, the bigger the machine you need to handle processing larger volumes of waste.

Motor Type

Unless you live on an estate, or you have an extensive garden that requires plenty of trimming throughout the growing season, an electric chipper/shredder is all you need to process your garden material. However, if you live on a large estate, and you find yourself visiting the dump frequently with your garden refuse, then consider a gas-powered model.

Electric shredder is more efficient, and they make less noise. The sound of shredding the material is loud enough already, but a powerful gas motor roaring to life in your yard on a Sunday afternoon is sure to annoy the neighbors.

Gas-powered models are handy on large estates, as they offer the gardener portability, allowing them to take the machine to the job site on the plot. Gas-powered models also make short work of large branches and can run for ages without the fear of the motor burning out.

Chipper Shredder FAQ

In case you still have a few more questions about choosing the right chipper/shredder for your yard work, check out this FAQ.

How do you use a chipper shredder?

The volume of yard waste you process during the growing season should be a primary factor in selecting your chipper/shredder. Some smaller gardens may process more waste than large, sparse gardens, so make the processing the main point when choosing your model.

If you require long run times, use a gas-powered model to prevent burnout during use. Gas-powered models are also the better choice for larger estates where the gardener needs to move the chipper/shredder around the property.

What is the reduction ratio?

The reduction ratio refers to the processing power of your machine. A 10:1 reduction ratio means that the chipper/shredder processes the garden waste down to 1/10th of its original size.

Most residential chipper/shredders come with a ratio of 10:1, but some models offer reduction ratios of 20:1 as well.

What loads can a chipper shredder handle?

Your chipper/shredder will prefer lighter loads, and overloading an electric machine might result in early burnout of the motor and reduced service life.

How do you feed a chipper shredder?

Always feed the chipper shredder using a push stick to force the material down towards the blades. Never use your hands. Make sure you wear eye protection and gloves when using the machine. The shredder processes the material and sends it to the chute for expulsion into the collection bag.

What do I do with my shredded material?

After processing your yard waste, send it to a compost heap. If you collect enough material, throughout the growing season, you’ll have plenty of mulch and compost for the following year. A good quality chipper/shredder can cut your gardening costs, and it pays for itself over enough seasons.

Conclusion

One of the biggest drawbacks of gardening is maintenance. Pruning and trimming are challenging enough, but sending all the garden waste to the dump is a hassle you don’t need in your life. A chipper/shredder machine is the tool you need to cut down on your gardening chores and costs.

Turn your garden waste into food for your flowerbeds, and start an organic compost heap in the corner of your yard today. Get rid of small branches and twigs with ease, and turn them into wood chips for your flowerbeds.

If you’re still on the fence with choosing the best chipper shredder machine for your yard work, then you can rely on our top choices in this review. Any of our top three models would make an excellent choice, and there’s a model to suit regular shredding, light use, and a budget model for cost-conscious gardeners as well.

Turn your gardening chores from a hassle into a hobby with a chipper shredder.
